About Us
Westwood Musical Society Peterborough
Get to know a little more about our amateur dramatic society.

Our Story
Westwood Musical Society started as a very small company back in 1930, and back then was known as Westwood Works Musical Society. Shows were enjoyed by not only the Barker Perkins employees but hundreds of other people from the surrounding areas in Peterborough.
Over the next few years the small society put on productions which included Money in the Roller drome, Fanny and the Servant Problem, Cupid and the Ogre and The Strange Adventures of Mrs Brown.

In 1933 members from both Westwood Musical Society and Willesden Musical Society came together and put on their first production in 1934 of Miss Hook of Holland. This was the societies first big production which was staged in the old Empire Theatre, or The Little Theatre as it was known.

The society continued to grow and by 1938 was ready to move into the newly built Embassy Theatre, being the first amateur society to use the 1,500 seat theatre.

When the war started in 1939 this meant that the societies production of Jill Darling was the last the show that the society would put on until 1946.

Since then the society produced a show every year up to and after 1992 when manufacturing ceased at Westwood Works. It was not unusual for the performances to attract a large crowd with weekly audience of as many as 10,000.

After 42 years at the Embassy theatre (later known as The ABC Theatre), the societies final performance there was Oklahoma in 1980 just months before the theatre closed.

Following the closure the society put on their first production at the Key Theatre in 1981, Kiss Me Kate. Since then WMSP has put on many productions until recently.

Over the years the society has put on many productions, and has put on a show every year until recently when our 2020 show of Made In Dagenham was postponed until 2 years later due to COVID a week before opening night, we finally got to perform this show at The Cresset in May 2023.

Recently the society has been taken over by a new committee who are dedicated to continue the legacy of Westwood Musical Society Peterborough, and to continue to put on productions for everyone to enjoy.

Watch this space, the society has so much more to offer.
